How Buying an Electric Vehicle Saves You Money
Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming increasingly popular for a variety of reasons: they’re more environmentally friendly, more technologically advanced, and even save you money. While EVs may have a higher purchase price than gas-powered vehicles, they can actually save owners money in the long run. Here’s how buying an EV can save you money:
Fuel
Data shows that EVs cost $.05 per mile and gas cars cost $.15 per mile. On top of that, you won’t have to stop to refuel at the gas station, saving you extra time and money.
Maintenance Costs
EVs are less complex, have fewer moving parts, and do not require oil changes, engine tuneups, or other common services for standard cars.
Incentives
There are many incentives available for purchasing an EV, including discounts, rebates, and tax credits that can save you thousands of dollars. Depending on the state you live in and your financial situation, you could be eligible for even more EV rebates. You can even personalize your incentives with this savings calculator.
For California residents, here are some of the top incentive programs for new EVs:
- CA State Rebate (CVRP) – $1,000-$4,500
- California Clean Fuel Reward – $800-$1,500
- Federal Tax Credit – Up to $7,500 on your tax liability
- HOV Lane Access – Drive in the fast lane as a single passenger. Valid for 3 years
Note: you’ll need to receive the grants before you purchase an EV.
- Clean Car For All (CCFA) – Up to $9,500 for New or Used if you retire a 15 year old gas car
- Clean Vehicle Assistance Program (CVAP) – $2,500-$5,000 for New or Used
- Drive Clean Assistance Program (DCAP) – $2,500-$5,000 for New or Used
- MCEv (For MCE customers) – $3,500 for New
- Drive Forward Electric (Peninsula Clean Energy Customers) – Up to $4,000 for Used
